AmeriCorps Job Description

Mission Statement of SAS/CVA

SAS/CVA is committed to creating a community free from violence.  We provide services designed to raise awareness of and respond to the impact of interpersonal violence and other crimes.  Through a combination of direct service, education, training, policy development and consulting to the University and broader community, we serve as a critical voice in challenging prevailing beliefs and attitudes about violence.

SAS/CVA is seeking a full time AmeriCorps employee to work in collaboration with current staff to do the following:

  • Develop and implement programming designed to engage members of the Rutgers community in preventing violence against women.  This includes but is not limited to our annual Clothesline Project, Silent Witness Exhibit, Healing the Wounded Heart survivor art exhibit, and the Empty Chair campaign (designed to educate people about domestic violence). 
  • Further develop our Men for an End Group comprised of Rutgers staff and students.  This includes connecting with university groups that are male such as fraternities and sports teams as well as expanding the connection to include more staff and faculty.
  • Work with our peer improv theater groups, SCREAM (Students Challenging Reality and Education Against Myths) Theater and SCREAM Athletes to further advance their work.
  • Develop content for our website that is related to the above programs.
  • Deliver interactive and educational programs to various on-campus groups

Skills

  • A minimum knowledge base about issues of violence against women.
  •  Experience in “community organizing” and the ability to connect with diverse groups of people, primarily college students.
  • Excellent written, reading and verbal skills.  Self motivated and organized.
  • Computer competency including use of social networks
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • College graduate or close to completing undergraduate degree
  • Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship or other lawful authorization to work in the United States.
  • Applicants must have no criminal record or prove that existing records will not interfere with job duties.
  • Some projects may require the use of the Members’ own vehicles. Work related travel costs will be reimbursed
  • Must be available to serve approximately 40 hours per week over a period of 11.5 months with the goal of accumulating 1700 hours of service between November 1, 2009 and October 31, 2010.

Benefits

  • AmeriCorps members will receive the living allowance/stipend of $11,400.00 payable over 11.5months. Members who complete 1700 hours of service within 11.5 months are eligible for a $4,725.00 AmeriCorps Education Benefit, which can be used to finance postsecondary education expenses and/or debts. Fringe benefits are provided, including health insurance and child care (for those who are income eligible.)
