SAS/CVA is pleased to offer a new, innovative educational
program for student-athletes, entitled “The Locker Room
and Beyond: Student Athlete Leaders Challenging Sexual Violence”.
Consisting of a 25- minute video (or DVD) and a companion facilitator’s
guide, this program is tailored to specifically address the issues facing
student-athletes and sexual violence on campus.
The video was based on the findings from research conducted by the department
on student-athlete culture, and student-athletes were involved in every
aspect of creating the program. Our goal was to develop a video that
depicted a realistic look at student-athlete culture and the occurrence
of sexual violence, and to use language, scenarios, and experiences to
which student-athletes can relate. Throughout the program, we approach
student-athletes as potential leaders in taking a stand against sexual
violence, rather than addressing them as potential perpetrators. Our
belief is that student-athletes are campus leaders and that they can
utilize their status to create communities that do not tolerate violence.
The video consists of a scenario involving student-athletes and sexual
violence, and all of the actors are student-athletes at Rutgers University.
There is also information and testimony provided by coaches, athletic
administrators, experts in the field of sexual violence, and student-athlete
leaders. A preview of the video is available at http://sexualassault.rutgers.edu/screamvideo.htm.
The facilitator’s guide accompanies the video and provides information
and activities to be used to follow up on video and to make sure accurate
information is provided, as well as to explore ways in which student-athletes
on your campus can take a positive stand against sexual violence.
The cost for the total program (video or DVD plus facilitator’s
guide) is $150, plus $2.75 for shipping. It can be purchased by contacting
Ruth Anne Koenick, Director, Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim
Assistance, at 732-932-1181 or koenick@rci.rutgers.edu.
Please contact the department if you have questions about the program,
need assistance with facilitation, or are seeking additional resources
for student-athletes and sexual violence. Staff from the department may
be available to facilitate the program on your campus. We are also pleased
to offer our student-athlete peer educator program, SCREAM
Athletes, which might be
of interest to your campus. An executive
summary
of our study on student-athletes and sexual violence is also available.
