SCREAM Theater
Students
Challenging Reality and Educating
Against
Myths |
All
students at Rutgers University are welcome to join SCREAM Theater. A
genuine interest in the issues and in creating social change is all that
is needed for membership. Below are some common questions that you may ask
about joining.
What exactly is
SCREAM Theater?
The “SCREAM” in SCREAM
Theater stands for Students Challenging Realities and Educating Against
Myths. We are a group consisting mostly of undergraduate and some graduate
students at Rutgers. SCREAM Theater is the peer education improvisational
theater group associated with the Department of Sexual Assault Services
and Crime Victim Assistance at Rutgers University.
What does SCREAM
Theater do?
SCREAM Theater uses
improvisational theater to address interpersonal violence. This involves
issues such as harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, emotional,
physical, and verbal abuse, and same-sex violence.
Who does SCREAM
perform for?
SCREAM performs for
various audiences including, but not limited to: high schools, groups on
all Rutgers campuses, other colleges, law enforcement agencies, judges,
and rape crisis centers. In total we do about 70 performances a
year.
We go on retreats and
have been invited to perform many places outside New Jersey to spread
awareness about sexual assault and dating violence.
Do I have to act or
have had acting experience before joining?
NOT at ALL!!!! None of
us are professional actors and some of the people involved have never had
acting experience previous to SCREAM.
Also, you will never
be forced to play any role that is not comfortable for you. We will
provide you with any training needed specific to the role(s) you choose so
as to portray characters accurately and successfully.
The level of
involvement you wish to put into SCREAM is totally up to you. You can
choose to be involved in just coming to meetings, or you can choose to
also perform in skits, or even help us write skits. You can even do all
three! It’s up to you!
How will I learn
about the topics?
Come to the meetings!
We have meetings every other Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. during the semester.
Meetings are a way of getting to know members you will be working with in
skits, as well as educating yourself on topics specific to interpersonal
violence (not to mention there’s free food!) Meetings vary in topics and
activities every time, but will consist of guest speakers, videos,
discussions, and practice of improvisation techniques through various
activities. Meetings are basically a mix of improvisational theater
development and discussion based on issues SCREAM is involved
in.
