The Department of Sexual Assault
Services and Crime Victim Assistance (SAS/CVA) offers counseling and
advocacy services, educational programming, and training, consultation
and policy development services to all members of the University community.
Programs and services are available across the University for students,
faculty, and staff to promote ways of coping with the effects of
interpersonal violence, to reduce the risk of interpersonal violence, and
ultimately, to prevent such violence from occurring.
Counseling and Advocacy
Services are available to victims of crime and to those close to them.
Individual and group counseling is offered to assist victims with
identifying their needs and strengths to cope with and heal from the
effects of crime victimization. Advocacy services are offered to assist
victims with accessing any needed support and accommodation from the
university community while they work through the healing process, and to
assist victims with working with medical and legal systems. These services
include contacting faculty and other university staff on behalf of
victims, and accompanying victims to medical and legal appointments. All
counseling and advocacy services are free and confidential.
Educational programming on
the topics of sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, and other types
of interpersonal violence is available to all members of the University
community. Interactive programs are offered to challenge myths,
stereotypes and misconceptions, and to facilitate critical thinking about
interpersonal violence and the societal norms that contribute to this
violence. Ways to challenge attitudes and norms that support interpersonal
violence are offered.
Students
Challenging Realities and Educating Against Myths (SCREAM) Theater
is an interactive, educational theater experience available to all
members of the University community, New Jersey communities, and to
college campuses throughout the nation. Created by students, SCREAM uses
improvisational theater performances by student peer educators to teach
about interpersonal violence. Original performances designed by SCREAM
peer educators are used to engage students and other community members in
discussion and critical thinking about interpersonal violence, how to
confront this violence, and how to prevent it.
Training, Consultation, and
Policy Development Services are available to all members of the
University community and to other communities throughout New Jersey and
the nation. Training and consultation is offered to disseminate the most
current information and research about interpersonal violence and
resources available for addressing it, and to assist with developing
services that are victim-centered. Policy development services are offered
to assist with designing and implementing policies that address issues of
interpersonal violence and the needs of victims, and to hold perpetrators
accountable.
All services are confidential. For further information, or to schedule an
appointment, program or theater presentation, contact the Department of
Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance. If you are the victim
of interpersonal violence, department staff are available 24 hours per
day, seven days a week.
