The Department of Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance is always looking for student volunteers. If you are interested, please contact sascva@rci.rutgers.edu.

Currently, SAS/CVA is seeking volunteers to respond to survivors/victims of sexual violence and domestic violence crises.  More information about our Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) as well as how you can become a member of either of these teams is below.

SART (Sexual Assault Response Team)

This program will utilize trained volunteers to staff a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). As an expansion of services provided by staff from SAS/CVA, SART provides an opportunity for members of the Rutgers community to be actively involved in having a positive impact on survivors of sexual assault. Modeled after SART programs throughout the country and in New Jersey, trained volunteers will provide crisis intervention, information and advocacy to students who report a sexual assault to the RUPD, Residence Life Staff or want to receive a medical examination at the county rape crisis center in Edison.

Staff, graduate students, and faculty interested in volunteering to become a member of SART are required to participate in a forty (40) hour training. The training will begin on September 25 and will continue through December 11.  Trainings will be held most Thursday nights (5 p.m. – 9 p.m.) and one Saturday. Each session will focus on a topic related to sexual violence and how to respond to survivors.

After successful completion of the training, volunteers will sign up for on-call coverage for evening and weekend hours. SART members will meet with victims/survivors either at the Rutgers University Police Department or at the Rape Crisis Intervention Center, the location where forensic evidence is collected.

Those interested should contact Laura Luciano, SAS/CVA Assistant Director, at 732-932-1181 or via email

DVRT (Domestic Violence Response Team)

The team members will work in conjunction with the Rutgers University Police Department and residence life staffs to provide support, information and referral at the time of a domestic violence crisis. SAS/CVA and the Police Department are committed to a multi-racial, multi-ethnic team to serve the community in the best manner possible.  Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have access to transportation, and submit to background investigations. A 40-hour mandatory intensive training course, held over a ten-week period in the spring semester and during evening and weekend hours, is required and will be provided to successful applicants. An understanding of domestic violence issues is a plus, as is bilingual capability.

Interested university staff, faculty or students should contact Lisa Smith, Domestic Violence Coordinator, at 732-932-1181, via email, or stop by the Department of Sexual Assault and Crime Victim Assistance (3 Bartlett Street, CAC) to pick up application materials and information on training.
