The theft or loss of a
wallet/purse can be very distressing. Many times after a crime occurs,
you may be feeling alone, confused, scared, or violated. The following
information will assist you in the event your wallet/purse is lost or
stolen. If your wallet/purse is stolen, it is strongly recommended you
file a report with the Rutgers
University Police Department. If you need
assistance in doing so or with other concerns regarding your stolen items,
contact the Department of Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim
Assistance by calling 732-932-1181.
The following is a
list of offices and agencies that you may need to contact to replace some
of the items that may have been stolen. Please note that the contact information and factual
information provided on this page are provided here as a service, are subject to change, and that SAS/CVA is not responsible for changes or errors on this
page.
Driver's Licenses

Any Local DMV
- You will need to
show a birth certificate, U.S. passport, or social security card. If you
do not have a social security card, a pay stub with your social security
number on it will be accepted. If you are not a citizen, then you will
need to show your immigration papers. The replacement fees are $5.00 for
a picture ID and $3.00 for a non-photo driver’s license.

DMV will send a packet for a valid non-photo driver's license or the
form (MV-44) can be downloaded from the New York DMV website. With a
copy of a police report, stolen licenses are free of charge; otherwise
the replacement fee is $8.00.

Credit card companies

has occurred in order for the victim to avoid responsibility for charges

A copy of the police
report will be required to reapply for a stolen/lost passport. To reapply
you will need two photographs which are less than six months old. These
photos can be either black and white or color with a white or off-white
background. If you are 13 years old or older, you will need to fill out
your own application. If you have children younger than 13 years old, a
parent must complete their application. A valid driver's license, a school
ID, a witness/proof of citizenship, or a birth certificate with a seal and
a filing date will be needed to reapply. If you are a naturalized citizen,
you must have a certificate of naturalization.
Cost: If you are 18
years old or older, the cost is $65.00 ($45.00 plus a $15.00 execution
fee). This passport is valid for 10 years. If you are younger than 18
years old, it will cost $40.00 ($30.00 plus a $10.00 execution fee). This
passport will be valid for 5 years. You can pay with a check or money
order, but you must pay with two separate checks or money orders, one for
the passport and one for the execution fee.

You must apply for a
new passport through your consulate in New York City or your embassy in

You will need to
complete the Immigration and Naturalization Services' form I-90
(Application to Replace Alien Registration Form), and submit it with your
fingerprints (form FD-258). These forms must be submitted along with a
fee, the amount of which is listed on the application, in person to the
Immigration and Naturalization Service office that has jurisdiction in
your area. Forms can be obtained by visiting the nearest INS office, or
calling the above listed number.

University's Replacement of Stolen Items

Cards: A photo identification card can be replaced at the Camden Campus
Center, Room 301 856-225-6161. There is no replacement fee for stolen
cards if a copy of the police report is presented; otherwise, the fee is
$15.00.
Newark:
- All Identification
Cards: A photo identification card can be replaced at the Department of
Parking and Transportation, 249 University Avenue, Room 306, 973-353-5837. There is no replacement fee for stolen cards if a copy of the
police report is presented; otherwise, the replacement fee is $15.00 with
proof of Rutgers registration and drivers license.
New
Brunswick:
- Student ID cards can be replaced at the RU Express Office, 732-932-8041, located in Records Hall, Room 104 on the College Avenue Campus. Faculty/Staff/Visitor ID cards can be replaced at University Human Resources, 732-932-3020, located in Administrative Services Building II, on the Cook Campus (Route 1). The replacement fee is $15.00 unless you have a copy of your police report and a verification letter from the Department of Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance. To receive a verification letter, call 732-932-1181 and speak with the Crime Victim Assistance Program Coordinator.

Go to your campus
housing office with a copy of the police report; they will have your lock
changed. If your keys have been stolen and you have a copy of the police
report, the replacement fee for keys and access card will be waived in
most cases.

If your house key is
stolen on a weekend, your preceptor or resident assistant will aid you in
gaining entry into your room, or s/he will contact someone to replace the
lock the following Monday morning. If your meal card is lost or stolen on
a weekend, report it to any of the dining halls on campus. You can gain
entry into the dining hall by giving your nine digit student ID number.
This can only be done a limited number of times (2 to 3), before a meal
card is again required.

Campus - Knight Express (Debit) Card/Meal Card:
Call the Meal Card
Office at 732-932-8041, or go to Records Hall, Room 102, on the College
Avenue Campus to invalidate your stolen card, and to receive another card.
There is no replacement fee for stolen cards if you present a copy of the
police report and a letter of verification; otherwise, the replacement fee
is $15.00. To obtain a verification letter, please contact the Department
of Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance at 732-932-1181
and speak with the Crime Victim Assistance Program Coordinator.
Debit cards must be
invalidated immediately. The university's liability on debit accounts is
limited to $50.00.
Camden Campus
Debit Card:
Replacements can be
obtained in the Camden Campus Center, third floor, in the Student
Activities Center or call 856-225-6161. There is no replacement fee for
stolen cards if a copy of the police report is presented; otherwise, the
replacement fee is $15.00.
Newark Campus:
Replacements for
Housing/Dining identification can be obtained in the Robeson Campus
Center, 350 Martin Luther King Blvd, room 219, or by calling 973-648-1037. There is no replacement fee.
